There are those travel experiences where you find yourself asking, what am I doing…..

Well, caving in Tenerife was one of them moments once again, most people come to Tenerife for sunshine, beaches, sailing and a cold beers by the pool… but here I was, pulling on a hairnet, fastening my helmet, switching on my head torch and heading underground into the damp, dark volcanic caves!

And then we stepped into Cueva del Viento – known as the Cave of the Wind… WOW – Suddenly, it all made sense.

One of the largest volcanic lava-tube systems in the world, Cueva del Viento was formed around 27,000 years ago as flowing lava carved its way through the landscape, creating an incredible underground network of tunnels, passages and formations.

As we walked through the cave, it was really interesting learning how volcanic eruptions created the stunning island of Tenerife, you begin to see the island completely differently, Tenerife isn’t just a destination of beaches and sunshine – it is an island created by powerful natural forces over thousands of years.

And that’s exactly what I love about travel, It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, trying something you might never normally consider and discovering a side of a destination that most visitors never see – So, would I go caving again?

Absolutely!
