When you step away from the hype of Barcelona, you’ll find the stunning Catalonia’s inland countryside, and it was seriously like stepping back in time, but nothing quite prepared me for the experience of visiting one of its ancient monasteries, and the stories behind it

Our morning with our guide, took us through the footsteps of the monks, I explored the beautifully preserved monastery, wandering through its ancient rooms and discovering how the monks once lived, worked and worshipped, it was an amazing experience standing inside those historic stone walls, surrounded by the silence of the countryside, really brought the past to life.

The Chapel Alter – Still Stands
Seeing their rooms and understanding their simple way of life was fascinating. It wasn’t just another sightseeing stop — it felt like stepping into another world and experiencing a tiny piece of life as a monk, just imagine life living in silence in this cell all your life, but they did have a little window for food and wine.

Towards the end of our tour we took part in a brilliant virtual reality headset experience, suddenly, I could see the monastery and its way of life through the eyes of a monk, creating an incredible connection between the ancient past and modern technology.

The whole trip was so immersive, fascinating and, quite honestly, something I would never have thought to experience before, at my age learning and understanding so much about the life as a Monk going back to 1084.

The surrounding Catalan landscape made it even more special, with ancient stone buildings, mountains, vineyards and olive groves stretching into the distance, this is the side of Spain that gets away from the busy resorts and crowds — authentic, peaceful and full of stories.
Another day, another incredible experience… and another memory from Catalonia that I certainly won’t forget, just wait to see my other activities in this beautiful region, and our supoort from the Tourist Board is absoultly amazing, sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones you never knew you were looking for.
